It is a good time to start tidying up the grasses in your borders. Cut them back hard and tease out any dead stem bases and leaves that have got caught. If the clump needs dividing it is best to leave that job until the grasses are sprouting and showing signs of active growth.
After a wet and frozen Winter, lawns have become compacted. Aerating the lawn will help it to recover quickly. There are tools available for this job but at its simplest use a fork - push into the grass - wiggle back and fore and remove. Take a pace and repeat.
Bulbs have started peeking through now with a promise of Spring. To ensure that they get enough light and can show their beauty to the full, tidy around the borders cutting back dead heads left through the Winter and fallen leaves.
